Thermax’s ETP solution enables sustainable effluent treatment for a palm oil refinery

Project overview

A palm oil refinery in Indonesia needed a compact and efficient solution to treat high-strength effluent generated from multiple process streams.

Thermax implemented a multi-stage effluent treatment plant combining physical, biological, and tertiary processes to effectively remove contaminants. The solution ensured regulatory compliance while optimising space, reducing costs, and delivering reliable performance.

Challenges 

  • A palm oil refinery in Indonesia required an efficient solution to treat highly polluting effluent from biodiesel, glycerine, refinery, and wash water streams. The effluent had high concentrations of oil, COD (chemical oxygen demand), and BOD (biological oxygen demand), requiring a compact and compliant treatment process.
Solution

Solution 

  • To treat 854 KLD of industrial effluent with high oil, COD, and BOD, a multi-stage effluent treatment plant (ETP) was set up. The solution included dissolved air flotation (DAF) for removing oil and suspended matter, followed by upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) for anaerobic digestion, and the activated sludge process (ASP) for aerobic treatment. Further, for tertiary treatment, dual media filter (DMF) and activated carbon filter (ACF) were added to reduce total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, odour, and trace COD levels.

  • Delivered a user-friendly and cost-effective system with reduced footprint and lower capex, ensuring compliance with government norms.
