Aerobic treatment is a biological process used in wastewater management that relies on oxygen and aerobic microorganisms to break down organic pollutants.
These microorganisms metabolise organic matter, converting it into carbon dioxide, water, and new microbial cells. This process effectively reduces organic constituents, which are measured in terms of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The process can also remove ammonical nitrogen from wastewater.
