Thermax’s multi-fuel boiler enables sugar manufacturer to cut fossil fuel dependence and improve sustainability

Project overview

A leading sugar manufacturer in the Philippines needed a dependable steam generation solution to support critical milling operations, while managing seasonal fluctuations in fuel availability and advancing its sustainability goals.

Thermax partnered with the customer to deliver a flexible and efficient approach, enabling reliable operations through the use of multiple biomass fuels. The project helped the customer optimise energy costs, improve operational continuity, and move towards a more sustainable energy model.

Project overview
Challenges

Challenges

 • A leading sugar manufacturing company in the Philippines, recognised as a key player in the country’s agribusiness sector, required a reliable solution to meet its high-pressure steam demands for critical milling operations. The challenge was to balance steam generation with seasonal variations in fuel availability while integrating a system that could operate on multiple fuels, including bagasse and other biomass. This would not only ensure uninterrupted operations but also support long-term cost efficiency and sustainability.
Solution

Solution

 • Thermax addressed the requirement by supplying and commissioning a 170 TPH travelling grate boiler designed to fire both bagasse and biomass. The boiler, operating at a pressure of 108 Kg/cm²(g) and a steam temperature of 540°C, was engineered to deliver consistent high-pressure steam for the sugar mill’s core processes. Its multi-fuel capability provided the flexibility to co-fire with other forms of biomass, ensuring a reliable energy source even during off-season periods when bagasse supply is limited.
Result

Result

 • The solution delivered significant operational and financial benefits. By utilising in-house biomass resources, the company was able to reduce its reliance on costly fossil fuels and substantially lower energy expenses. The boiler’s efficient performance also contributed to compliance with emissions regulations while advancing the company’s sustainability goals. Overall, the project enabled the sugar manufacturer to achieve higher operational efficiency, cost savings, and a more environmentally responsible energy model.
